Freshly meals9/1/2023 ![]() ![]() Sometimes they were enough to leave me satisfied, and other times I was hungry by 3 p.m. Instead of having my Freshly meals for dinner, I opted to eat them for lunch as I worked from home. On average the meals contain about 13 ounces of food-not super tiny, but light. Since it was called “stew,” I expected it to be on the heartier, thicker side. I tried amping it up with a little salt, pepper, and garlic powder to no avail. My least favorite meal was the country chicken stew, which was bland beyond repair. Unlike many other premade chicken teriyaki meals, I appreciated that Freshly’s didn’t taste like a mouthful of corn syrup. My second favorite was the chicken teriyaki bowl, which also had an appealing balance of sweet and savory. I could taste the turmeric, ginger, coriander, and garam masala-and I can confirm that it beats any store-bought frozen version I’ve had. The best meal I tried was a vegetarian option, the Indian-spiced chickpea curry bowl with basmati rice, which had a surprisingly complex depth of flavor. I was satisfied with most of the dishes but not blown away by any of them. But…are they good?įor the most part, yes. Keep the meals in the fridge until you’re ready to eat, at which point you can heat them up in the microwave for three minutes, in a skillet for five minutes, or in the oven for about 30 minutes. In the middle there are meal kits that do most of the work for you with premade sauces and preportioned ingredients from companies like Home Chef or Sunbasket. On one end there are kits that cater to home cooks who want help meal planning and would prefer to skip the trip to the store but still like having control over their cooking-think curated grocery boxes paired with recipes from companies like Hungryroot or Purple Carrot. Meal delivery services exist on a spectrum. That’s what drew me to Freshly, a health-conscious meal service that provides fully cooked single-serving meals. But then I learned that some meal kit options do arrive this way. I enjoy cooking, but usually when I order a meal for delivery, I prefer it to arrive at my door fully prepared, ready to be devoured on sight. You mean, I order meals online and when they arrive I still have to chop the veggies, sear the chicken, and clean a bunch of dishes? Hard pass, I’d think to myself. For a long time I didn’t understand the appeal of meal kit delivery services. ![]()
